J. Michael Thomas

Michael graduated magna cum laude from Wake Forest University. After he graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Law in 1984, he was an associate in the firm of Bethea & Sands in Rockingham County as. In 1987, he opened his own law firm Michael Thomas, Attorney at Law, a general practice, for 22 years. In 2008, Michael joined our firm to head up the litigation team and to concentrate his practice in commercial litigation, construction law, and municipal law.

In the construction area, Michael has represented owners, developers, general contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers, in general contract disputes, lien claims, and bond claims in state and federal courts.

In the municipal area, Michael has dealt with virtually every aspect of North Carolina law governing cities and towns, including municipal incorporation, modification of local form of government, annexation, planning, zoning, subdivision, municipal and inter-local contracts and other agreements, acquisition and disposition of municipal property, franchising, taxation and assessment, tax foreclosure, historic preservation, condemnation and inverse condemnation, building inspections, ordinance drafting and enforcement, assessment and prosecution of civil penalties, public personnel issues, police and fire services, parks and recreation, public enterprises and Voting Rights Act submissions.
